Senior year has a funny way of sneaking up on you.
One minute you're dropping your child off at freshman orientation, and the next you're talking about graduation, college visits, prom, and senior portraits.
If you're wondering when to schedule senior pictures, what to wear, whether to choose a studio or outdoor location, or if your teen even wants to take photos, you're in the right place.
After photographing hundreds of high school seniors throughout Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Brookline, Natick, and Greater Boston, I've learned one thing:
The best senior portraits aren't about perfect poses.
They're about personality.
And that's exactly what this guide is here to help you create.
Senior pictures aren't just another item on the graduation checklist.
They're a celebration of one of the biggest transitions in life.
Years from now, these images will remind you not just what your senior looked like, but who they were at this exact moment.
And that's something worth investing in.
When Should You Book Senior Pictures?
One of the biggest mistakes families make is waiting too long.
The best months for senior portraits are May through October, depending on the look you're hoping to achieve.
Spring offers blooming flowers and fresh greenery.
Summer gives us longer evenings and beautiful sunsets.
Fall brings incredible foliage throughout Massachusetts.
I always recommend booking several months in advance, especially if you want a weekend appointment or peak fall colors.
Studio or Outdoor Senior Pictures?
This is probably my most common question.
My answer? Why choose just one?
Many of my custom senior sessions include both.
We might begin in my Newton studio, creating timeless editorial portraits with professional lighting.
Then we'll head outdoors for a completely different feel.
Urban brick walls, parks, sports fields, and flower fields. Even your favorite coffee shop.
Your senior session should feel like your story, not anyone else's.
What Should You Wear?
This question has been answered HERE, but here's the short answer: bring variety. I usually recommend three to five outfits, including something casual, something a little dressier, and something that reflects your personality. That might be your sports uniform, dance costume, letterman jacket, college sweatshirt, cowboy boots, leather jacket, favorite sneakers, or even your favorite hoodie. The goal isn't to create a fashion show. The goal is to create portraits that feel like you and tell your story.
